At least 25 people have died after consuming spurious liquor in Bihar’s Saran and Siwan districts. Authorities have arrested 12 individuals suspected of involvement in the illicit liquor trade.

Director General of Police (DGP) Raj told ANI, “A total of 25 people have lost their lives so far—20 in Siwan and 5 in Saran. Twelve people have been arrested, with 3 in Saran and 9 in Siwan.”

He vowed strict action against those allegedly involved, saying that evidence is being collected based on information provided by the arrested individuals regarding the ‘liquor mafia.’

“Information about the ‘liquor mafia’ has been obtained from the arrested individuals. Strict action will be taken against everyone involved in this network,” Raj added.

Saran Superintendent of Police, Kumar Ashish, said that the toxic liquor was industrial spirit, prompting investigations into the supply chain and distribution networks connected to the tragedy. “A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to expedite the inquiry,” Ashish said.

He added that local police personnel have been suspended, and the Station House Officer (SHO) and other staff members are under investigation. “If their explanations are unsatisfactory, disciplinary action will follow.”

Over the past 24 hours, authorities conducted 250 raids, seizing 1,650 liters of illicit alcohol in the district.

Saran District Magistrate, Aman Samir, said that the families of the deceased would be required to pledge their support for the state’s liquor ban before receiving any compensation.

“The kin of the deceased must affirm that they oppose liquor and support the government’s prohibition policy,” Samir said. “If the post-mortem reports meet the necessary conditions, each family will receive an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh.”

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held a high-level review meeting, directing the Secretary of the Prohibition, Excise, and Registration Department to visit the affected areas and conduct a thorough investigation.
