Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary at the towering Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat, on Thursday. Marking the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, PM Modi honored Patel’s enduring legacy with a wreath-laying ceremony, followed by the Unity Oath and participation in the grand Unity Day Parade.

“My salutations to Bharat Ratna Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary. Protecting the unity and sovereignty of the nation was the top priority of his life. His personality and work will continue to inspire every generation of the country,” PM Modi said on X.

The Unity Day Parade in Kevadia featured 16 marching contingents, including representatives from nine states, one Union Territory, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and four Central Armed Police Forces. Key highlights included the impressive Hell March by the National Security Guard (NSG), a thrilling stunt show by BSF and CRPF bikers, martial arts displays by the Border Security Force (BSF), a piped band performance by school children, and a “Surya Kiran” aerial display by the Indian Air Force.

Since 2014, October 31 has been observed as National Unity Day across India to commemorate Patel’s role in uniting the nation. Celebrated with events like the ‘Run for Unity,’ the day underscores his efforts to bring together the 562 princely states into a unified India, solidifying the foundation for a sovereign republic.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, served as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister from 1947 to 1950, earning him the title of the “Iron Man of India.” His contributions are credited with building a cohesive and independent India. (ANI)
