In a significant boost to indigenous defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH). This acquisition, split between 90 helicopters for the Indian Army and 66 for the Indian Air Force, underscores the government’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) in the defence sector.

HAL, the premier aeronautical company in India, will be responsible for delivering the entire order within a timeframe of six years. This project is expected to further propel India’s self-sufficiency in helicopter design and development. Notably, the LCH currently boasts an indigenous content of 45% by value, and this figure is poised to rise to 55% with the commencement of serial production.

This RFP marks a critical step towards modernization and strengthening India’s aerial defence capabilities. The LCH, also known as the Prachand (Fierce), is a potent helicopter designed for high-altitude warfare and reconnaissance missions. Its deployment will provide the armed forces with a significant edge in safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Analysts believe this deal will not only enhance India’s defence preparedness but also generate significant economic benefits. The project is expected to create a substantial number of jobs and stimulate growth in the domestic aerospace industry. HAL’s successful execution of this contract will further solidify its position as a leading manufacturer of combat helicopters.
