Congress plans strategy meetings for poll-bound States of Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and J&K next week

The election preparation meetings are important as the Congress would look to calibrate its strategy to take along their allies in Jharkhand and Maharashtra

Buoyed by the Lok Sabha results, the Congress on June 18 announced a series of strategy meetings for Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir where Assembly polls are expected later this year.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi would be meeting leaders from Jharkhand on June 24 to discuss the party’s election preparedness in the State and it will be followed by a meeting with leaders from Maharashtra the next day.

On June 26, Haryana Congress leaders will have their meeting with Mr. Kharge and Mr. Gandhi while J&K leaders will meet them a day later.

“Carrying forward the momentum in our favour, we are dedicated to ensuring a handsome victory in the upcoming state elections….Onward and upwards!,” AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal said in a post on X.

The election preparation meetings are important as the Congress would look to calibrate its strategy to take along their allies in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA bloc, which comprises the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), won 30 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the State. These three parties make up the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the State and plans to contest the Assembly elections as an alliance.

In Jharkhand as well, the party would look to continue its alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) along with other smaller players.

In fact, sources claimed that Mr. Gandhi’s decision to retain the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) was taken with an aim to strengthen the party’s alliance with Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) before the next Assembly polls and improve its presence in the Hindi heartland. The decision to field Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, someone who has worked in the constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli for two decades now, from a constituency in Kerala can be seen as the party’s attempt to bridge the North-South divide.

And if Ms. Vadra wins the bypoll from Wayanad in Kerala, the Opposition benches will add an articulate speaker in its ranks. “The voice of the people will resonate much louder with both @RahulGandhi and @priyankagandhi present inside the Parliament,” Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said in a post on X.
