Israel has declared United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres persona non grata, banning him from entering the country. Foreign Minister Israel Katz made the announcement, criticizing Guterres for failing to condemn Iran’s recent attacks on Israel and the actions of Hamas during the October 7 attacks.

“Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil” Katz said

He emphasized that Guterres has not denounced the violence and atrocities committed by Hamas and has not taken a firm stance against these groups.

In a post on X, Katz expressed his frustration, asserting that Guterres’ lack of condemnation and support for terrorist organizations tarnishes the UN’s credibility. “Israel will continue to defend its citizens and uphold its national dignity, with or without Antonio Guterres,” he added.

Alex Gandler, deputy spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, echoed these sentiments, stating that Guterres has not been supportive during Israel’s ongoing conflicts with Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas. “The Secretary-General has stood on their side several times. Instead of condemning Iran, he called for peace without addressing the real culprits attacking Israel,” Gandler said.

Guterres’ remarks came in response to a recent barrage of nearly 200 ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards Israel, which prompted a coordinated defense effort between U.S. military forces and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The U.S. Navy deployed destroyers to assist in intercepting the incoming missiles.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized Iran’s actions as a “big mistake,” warning that “Tehran will pay for it.” He stated, “The Iranian regime does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and retaliate against our enemies.”

IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari labeled Iran’s missile attack a “severe and dangerous escalation,” stating, “There will be consequences. We will respond wherever, whenever, and however we choose, in accordance with the directive of the government of Israel.

On Wednesday, Chief of the General Staff LTG Herzi Halevi discussed the evolving situation with General Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command, highlighting the urgent need for strategic coordination amid rising tensions in the region.
