Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday to review the ongoing situation in Bangladesh and its potential implications for India’s Northeast region.

The high-level meeting, which also included Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, addressed growing concerns among residents in the border areas. Chief Minister Sangma later posted on social media platform X, “The concerns and apprehensions of our people were raised during the meeting. GoI is committed to keeping our borders safe and appeals to all to maintain peace and harmony.”

The discussion comes amid a fluid political situation in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation on August 5 following mounting protests. The instability in the neighboring country has raised concerns about potential spillover effects in India’s northeastern states.

Home Minister Shah’s office confirmed the meeting but did not provide specific details about the discussions.

This meeting highlights the Indian government’s proactive approach to addressing regional security concerns. It also underscores the importance of Meghalaya, a border state, in maintaining stability in the region.

The talks between Shah and Sangma come against the backdrop of Meghalaya’s political landscape, where Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) leads an alliance government. The NPP won 26 seats in the recent Assembly elections, with Sangma securing a second consecutive term as Chief Minister.
