Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday paid floral tributes to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. His birth anniversary, observed on August 29, is celebrated each year as National Sports Day.

Known as ‘The Wizard’ of hockey, Major Dhyan Chand represented the Indian national team from 1925 to 1949, scoring over 1,500 goals in 185 matches as a centre forward. His illustrious career includes three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In recognition of his contributions to Indian sports, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.

National Sports Day serves as a fitting tribute to India’s sports icons, honoring their contributions in bringing international recognition to the country.

Speaking at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi, Mandaviya emphasized the significance of fitness and health for national development, urging everyone to dedicate one hour to participate in their favorite sport.

Meanwhile, Major Dhyan Chand’s son, Olympian Ashok Kumar, unveiled a statue of his father in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand. In a post on X, Shah said: “I pay my tribute to the Hockey Magician, Major Dhyan Chand, on his birth anniversary and wish all countrymen a Happy ‘National Sports Day.’ Major Dhyan Chand’s life is a symbol of the fact that any goal can be achieved with unwavering dedication and continuous practice. He not only elevated Indian hockey to great heights but also inspired a positive consciousness towards sports in the country. This brilliant player of the sports world will always guide future generations.”
