Rahul Gandhi to be the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha

CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi wrote to pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab informing that Rahul Gandhi will be the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a letter about the decision has been sent to pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab.

The decision on Mr. Gandhi’s appointment as the Leader of Opposition was made after a meeting of the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence.

“Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson (Sonia Gandhi) wrote to Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab, informing him of the decision to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha,” senior party leader K.C. Venugopal told reporters after the meeting, adding that the decision on other appointments will be decided later.

Mr. Gandhi, a five-term MP, currently represents the Rae Bareli constituency in the Lok Sabha. He took oath as an MP on Tuesday while holding a copy of the Constitution.

On June 8, the Congress Working Committee unanimously adopted a resolution asking Mr. Gandhi to become the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the 18th Lok Sabha.

Party president Mallikarjun Kharge urged him to “abide” by the CWC’s formal resolution and take up the responsibility. Taking note of the sentiments expressed at the party’s highest decision-making body, Mr. Gandhi said he will think it over and decide “very soon”.
