Sam Pitroda quits Congress post after his racial analogy triggers storm

Mr. Pitroda, a close aide of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, had courted controversy during a podcast when he cited ethnic and racial identities like Chinese, Africans, Arabs and Whites to describe the physical appearance of Indians from different parts of the country.

The Bharatiya Janata Party had termed Mr. Pitroda’s controversial remarks as “racist”, prompting the Congress leadership to gently nudge him to step down.

Before this controversy, Mr. Pitroda’s reference to inheritance tax in the United States while discussing the Congress’ Lok Sabha poll manifesto had given the BJP a chance to accuse the Congress of eyeing to ‘snatch’ people’s assets as part of its ‘redistribution of wealth’ policy.

Following this, Mr. Pitroda had resigned from the post on May 8 and his resignation was accepted by Mr. Kharge.

“Congress president has reappointed Sam Pitroda as chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress with immediate effect,” AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal said in a statement on Wednesday.
