The Indian High Commission in the Maldives has issued a statement regarding a fire incident that occurred in a building in Male City on September 9. The commission expressed relief that no loss of life or serious injuries were reported in the blaze and confirmed they are in contact with affected Indian nationals to provide necessary support.

In a post on X, the Indian High Commission said, “HCI expresses sadness on the unfortunate incident of fire in a building in Male City on Sep 9. Noted no loss of life or serious injuries. We thank Maldivian authorities for their rescue & relief efforts. We are in touch with affected Indian nationals to provide requisite support.”

The fire erupted in the kitchen of Gaamagu Cafe, located on Sosun Magu in Male. The cafe, constructed entirely of corrugated steel sheets, occupies the first floor of a three-story building. The blaze also affected an adjacent building, prompting the evacuation of many houses in the vicinity.

According to local police, two foreigners on the street – a man and a woman – were taken to the hospital after being affected by smoke. However, no other injuries were reported.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) received reports of the fire at Dhoohimerige in Henveiru ward at 2:40 pm local time on Monday. The ground floor of the affected building houses a cafe run by expatriates, while the top two floors were used as a residence.

The Indian High Commission expressed gratitude to Maldivian authorities for their prompt rescue and relief efforts.
