New Delhi: Bhupender Yadav, Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, spoke about the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged people to plant at least one tree as a token of gratitude to mother Earth and nurture it throughout their life.

While speaking at Times Network's India Climate Summit, the minister recalled that PM Modi's first programme was 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' on June 5.

"When the results of the elections came on June 4… First program done by PM Narendra Modi was 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' on June 5," he recalled. This highlights that PM Modi's mission and vision is focused on climate action, the minister added.

What is Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam Campaign?

On June 5, PM Modi launched 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' Campaign on the occasion of World Environment Day. PM Modi planted a Peepal tree at Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi. He also urged all to contribute in making our planet better and informed that in the last decade, India has undertaken numerous collective efforts which have led to increased forest cover across the nation. This is great for our quest towards sustainable development, Shri Modi added further.

India's Climate Action Programme

Further, Bhupender Yadav highlighted how India made significant progress through it's climate action programme. The minister said India is among 26 developed countries which presented its greenhouse gas inventory at COP based on 2019 "which is a big achievement under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

India's carbon emission is less than 4 per cent and it's annual growth rate Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is 7 per cent and cumulative annual growth of emission is 7% which means the economic growth rate is higher. The minister said it is a big achievement.

"We have achieved, 11 years in advance, our original target of reducing emissions intensity by 33 to 35% over the 2005 level by 2030…," the Union Minister said.
