Why isn’t BJP Minister resigning over railway accident, asks Selvaperunthagai

Criticising the BJP-led NDA government over the recent train accident in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai questioned why Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw had not resigned.

Addressing the media at Sathyamurthy Bhavan, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said that the Congress had a history of taking responsibility for such incidents, whereas the BJP Ministers were showing that they were power-hungry. “Earlier, there was a similar incident involving the Coromandel Express in which 288 people died. The Railways Minister called it an ‘accident’. Congress Minister [Lal Bahadur] Shastri resigned when the Ariyalur train accident took place. Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar also resigned as Railway Ministers, taking responsibility for such incidents. Why is the BJP Minister not resigning?” he asked.

Mr. Selvaperunthagai also criticised the comments made by Union Minister of State for Water Resources V. Somanna on the Mekedatu dam issue, and said that “not even a single brick” can be laid without the consent of Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Selvaperunthagai alleged that the AIADMK had received “an order from somewhere not to contest the Vikravandi election“, and it was possible that the party would help the PMK-BJP candidate surreptitiously.

Su. Thirunavukkarasar, K.V. Thangkabalu and K.S. Alagiri are among the Congress leaders appointed to the election committee for the Vikravandi bypoll.
