Delta Flight Diverted After Passengers Allegedly Served “Spoiled” Food

Vacations are something we all wait for months and sometimes even for years, in case of a specific destination. When the time finally comes, all we look forward to is a comfortable flight, imagining ourselves settling into spacious, cosy seats and enjoying tasty meals. It's a nice thought, right? But sometimes, things don't go as planned. Instead of the roomy seat we dreamed of, we find ourselves cramped with barely enough space to stretch our legs. The in-flight meals that sounded delicious when described on the menu often turned out to be disappointing. This is exactly what happened with the passengers on a Delta Airlines flight recently.

The flight made an emergency landing in New York after passengers reportedly received a "spoiled" meal. According to the New York Post, the A330 plane, carrying 277 customers, departed from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport just before 11 pm on Tuesday. However, it was diverted to John F. Kennedy International Airport after it was discovered that some of the in-flight meals in the main cabin were spoiled.

FlightRadar24 data shows that the Delta plane was over Saint Pierre and Miquelon, a French archipelago south of Canada's Newfoundland, when the decision to redirect was made. The crew decided to land the aircraft after consulting with medical experts. The airline has not disclosed how the contamination was detected, nor have they provided information on how many of the 277 passengers consumed the meal or whether any exhibited symptoms of food poisoning.

While the incident sounds appalling, it is, unfortunately, not the only time when the quality of food has ruined the travel experience of passengers travelling via air. Just last month, in June, an Air India passenger had complained of finding a metal blade in his in-flight meal from Bengaluru to San Francisco. In his social media post, Mathures explained that he was enjoying his in-flight meal of roasted sweet potato and fig chaat when he felt a piece of metal in his mouth. Upon inspecting it, he realised it was a metal blade.

Air India food can cut like a knife. Hiding in its roasted sweet potato and fig chaat was a metal piece that looked like a blade. I got a feel of it only after chewing the grub for a few seconds. Thankfully, no harm was done. Of course, the blame squarely lies with Air India's… pic.twitter.com/NNBN3ux28S

Another incident took place earlier this year, in March, where passengers on a Vistara flight expressed disappointment with the quality of the in-flight meal service and compared it to ‘hostel food.’

Wow! @airvistara your main meal aboard UK820 this evening evoked a sense of nostalgia! That of near inedible meals served in a badly run hostel mess by indifferent cooks! Insipid flavours, the sort of texture that would indicate the chicken should have ideally been consumed hours… pic.twitter.com/Gdgadwoq0C
