From Gujarat To Germany: A Journey Of Cultural Discovery And Academic Growth

Hey there! This is Vidhi from Vadodara, Gujarat. I’m going to talk about my journey from Vadodara to Berlin. When I first landed in Berlin in October 2022, I was hit by two things right away—the chill of a German winter and the fact that Sundays here are nothing like back home. Shops and markets closed, streets a little quieter—a very different rhythm from India, where life buzzes seven days a week. Adjusting to this slower weekend pace has actually been refreshing in some ways, encouraging me to plan my time and take restful breaks.

Why did I choose Germany for my higher studies?

Germany was always on my list for higher studies, mainly due to its reputation for affordable, high-quality education and its technological advancement. Studying Data Analytics at BSBi in Berlin aligns well with Germany's strong emphasis on tech innovation and data-driven fields. Moreover, Europe’s mix of rich history and modern infrastructure is fascinating. I knew Germany, with its scenic landscapes and well-organised cities, would offer a fulfilling life beyond just academics.

Living in Berlin has been an adventure. Known for its vibrant nightlife, Berlin is also packed with historical sites, including the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Museum Island. I love exploring the city’s diverse parks, like Tiergarten and Tempelhofer Feld, where you see locals enjoying picnics, jogging, or simply unwinding. Berlin is quite multicultural and has a significant Indian community, which makes it easier to feel connected and at home. Weekends here are lively, with an abundance of events, street food markets, and cultural gatherings to explore. We also have a Hindu temple here, which is a good medium to connect with our own people.

Adapting to a new learning environment

The experience with classmates and university colleagues has been genuinely supportive. I’ve met many fellow Indians at BSBi, which made the initial adjustment smoother and less lonely. The diversity in Berlin's student community is incredible, and people here are generally open-minded and friendly, making it easy to share experiences and collaborate. Having friends from various cultural backgrounds has expanded my perspectives and created a sense of community.

Whereas the German education system emphasises practical, hands-on learning, which was a shift from the theoretical approach I was familiar with in India. While it was challenging at first, I received excellent support from friends and professors who guided me along the way. There’s a focus on independent research and projects, and the professors encourage extra effort and real-world application of concepts. Adjusting to this style has been rewarding as it pushes you to take ownership of your learning.

Every day in Berlin has added a new dimension to my journey. From navigating the efficient public transport to working part-time jobs that helped me manage my expenses, the whole experience has been incredibly enriching. One highlight has been building connections within the German community, which has been crucial for networking and finding part-time work. Discovering hidden spots in Berlin—small cafes, art galleries, and weekend markets—has also made living here exciting.

Building connections, managing finances, and finding home in Berlin

I’ve been in Berlin for over two years now, and each month brings new discoveries. I’ve realised how important it is to learn German, especially for long-term connections and career opportunities. Although Berlin is quite English-friendly, speaking German has opened doors to more authentic interactions with locals. This city has taught me a lot about balancing independence with the community, as well as adapting to new social norms.

While homesickness does hit occasionally, the large Indian community in Berlin has been a real support system. I also stay connected with my family and friends back home through regular calls and social media. To cope, I keep myself engaged by exploring Berlin and maintaining routines that help me feel grounded, like cooking traditional meals or attending community events. Having a familiar circle of friends at the university helps me feel connected to home.

When I talk about food and accommodation, they were the main challenges initially. Finding reasonably priced housing in Berlin is tough, and rental prices are on the higher side. I relied heavily on recommendations from friends and online platforms to find a good place to stay. Cooking for myself has been a great way to control food expenses and stay healthy. I shop at local markets and discount grocery stores, which helps in keeping costs manageable.

Balancing finances has been a learning curve. I keep a budget for essentials, focusing on what’s truly necessary versus extra expenses. Part-time jobs have been invaluable for covering food and rent, and the experience has also taught me essential life skills. Over time, I’ve learned to prioritise experiences, like travel and social events, that add meaning to my life here. This careful planning has allowed me to live comfortably without compromising my studies.
