Heavy rainfall continues in Northeast India, heat wave grips Northern plains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Northeast India during the next 4-5 days. Meanwhile, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are expected to persist over northern parts of the country during the same period.

Over the past 24 hours, several regions experienced intense weather conditions. Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed in most parts of West Uttar Pradesh, many areas of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, East Uttar Pradesh, and isolated pockets of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal.

Heatwave conditions were also reported in some parts of Uttarakhand, northwest Rajasthan, isolated areas of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan, northeast Madhya Pradesh, and north Chhattisgarh.

Warm night conditions were observed in isolated pockets of northwest Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh. Maximum temperatures soared to 45-47°C in some parts of west Jharkhand, south Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, and north Rajasthan. The highest maximum temperature of 47.5°C was recorded in Kanpur, East Uttar Pradesh.

On the other hand, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls occurred at isolated places over Meghalaya and Sikkim. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Konkan & Goa, Central Maharashtra, West Madhya Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, and Telangana also witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

IMD has forecasted that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in some/many parts of Uttar Pradesh during the next 5 days, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand during the next 3 days, with isolated heat wave over Jharkhand on June 16th.

Heat wave conditions are also expected in some pockets of Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi during the next 5 days, with severe heat wave conditions in isolated pockets.

Some pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Division, northeast Madhya Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan, northwest Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and northwest Rajasthan may also experience heat wave conditions during this period. Warm night conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of northeast Madhya Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh.
