Residents of the national capital and surrounding regions can expect some respite from the severe hot weather conditions around June 30, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the arrival of the monsoon in Delhi-NCR by that time.
However, dust storms and light rainfall are likely in Delhi on Wednesday, according to IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar. He stated that while the red alert for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar has been downgraded, a red alert remains in place for West Uttar Pradesh for the next two days due to severe heatwave conditions.
“In Delhi-NCR, the temperature is expected to be around 40 degrees Celsius,” Dr. Kumar said, adding that the region could witness dust storms and light rainfall activity on Wednesday.
The IMD has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely in many parts of Uttar Pradesh on June 18 and 19, and in some areas on June 20 over Punjab. East India, however, may experience a 2-3 degree Celsius drop in temperature over the next three days.
As the extreme heatwave persists, Delhi’s power demand continues to surge, with the peak demand on Tuesday reaching an all-time high of 8,647 MW at 3:22 PM, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre data.
