Prime Minister lauds Lok Sabha speaker’s condemnation of emergency

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the Lok Sabha Speaker for his strong condemnation of the Emergency period in India and the associated excesses. In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his approval of the Speaker’s remarks and the significance of remembering this period in India’s history.

“I am glad that the Speaker strongly condemned the Emergency, highlighted the excesses committed during that time and also mentioned the manner in which democracy was strangled. It was also a wonderful gesture to stand in silence in honour of all those who suffered during those days,” Modi wrote.

Reflecting on the Emergency imposed 50 years ago, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of educating today’s youth about this dark chapter. He pointed out that the Emergency serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed when constitutional principles are violated, public opinion is suppressed, and institutions are undermined.

“The Emergency was imposed 50 years ago but it is important for today’s youth to know about it because it remains a fitting example of what happens when the Constitution is trampled over, public opinion is stifled and institutions are destroyed. The happenings during the Emergency exemplified what a dictatorship looks like,” Modi added.
