Sensex, Nifty end flat amid volatile trading

Indian benchmark indices ended flat on Thursday due to subdued market sentiment. Investors were awaiting the first-quarter results of TCS and factoring in the weekly expiry of Nifty futures and options contracts.

The NSE Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex both fell 0.03% to close at 24,315.95 and 79,897.34, respectively.

Shares of ONGC, BPCL, Coal India, ITC, and Tata Motors gained on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), while Tata Consumer Products, Bajaj Finance, M&M, Divi’s Laboratories, and NTPC underperformed, emerging as major laggards.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index edged up by 0.2%, and the SmallCap index advanced by 0.5%.

Shares of Shipping Corporation of India, Garden Reach Shipbuilders, Cochin Shipyard, Mazagon Dock, and Seamec surged between 5% and 20% after reports that the budget on July 23 could include the launch of a fund to help shipping firms avail loans at lower costs.
