Southee steps down as New Zealand Test captain, Latham to lead during India tour

Veteran pacer Tim Southee has stepped down as New Zealand’s Test captain, with wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham set to lead the team during their three-match Test series against India. This decision follows New Zealand’s 2-0 loss to Sri Lanka in Galle, including a defeat by an innings and 154 runs in one of the matches.

Southee had taken over as Test captain after Kane Williamson stepped down in 2022, guiding the team to six victories and two draws from 14 matches, according to the ICC. The 35-year-old stated that stepping down was in the team’s best interest, and he will fully support Latham as the new captain.

“Captaining the Black Caps in a format so special to me has been an absolute honor and privilege. Throughout my career, I’ve always put the team first, and I believe this decision is what’s best for the team,” Southee said, as quoted by the ICC. “Going forward, I believe my best contribution is focusing on my performances on the field, getting back to my best, taking wickets, and helping New Zealand win Test matches.”

“I will continue to support my teammates, particularly the young bowlers entering the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in his new role, and he knows I will be there to support him as he has supported me over the years,” Southee added.

Southee is currently preparing for New Zealand’s ICC World Test Championship series against India, which begins later this month. New Zealand coach Gary Stead paid tribute to the fast bowler, saying, “Tim is a fantastic player and leader, respected by both players and staff. He’s been a great servant to New Zealand Cricket for nearly 17 years on the international stage, and I commend his humility in stepping down.”

“It’s never easy to give up something you love, but Tim is a true team player, making the decision with the team’s best interest at heart. He remains one of our greatest players, and we fully expect him to continue playing a significant role in our Test side,” Stead concluded.

The three-match Test series between New Zealand and India is set to begin in Bengaluru on October 16.
