Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was today acquitted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the murder case of a former Dera official. Ranjit Singh, a member of the Dera’s state-level committee, was shot dead in 2002. It is alleged that the murder was linked to his suspected role in circulating an anonymous letter that narrated how Ram Rahim was sexually exploiting women at the Dera headquarters in Haryana’s Sirsa.
In 2021, a CBI court convicted Ram Rahim and four others in the murder case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The special court had held that it is proved beyond reasonable doubt that the Dera chief was aggrieved by the circulation of the letter and conspired with the other accused to kill Ranjit Singh. The 56-year-old Dera chief had challenged this conviction in the high court. The four others convicted by the CBI court have also been acquitted today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, having criss-crossed the country for Lok Sabha campaign, will arrive at the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Tamil Nadu’s Kanniyakumari district on May 30 for a spiritual sojourn.
PM Modi, 73, will undertake a 24-hour meditation during his stay at the memorial, the same spot where Swami Vivekananda meditated.

The woman, now 20, filed a police case in 2019 against four men, alleging that they had harassed, threatened and assaulted her. According to the FIR, the complainant, then 15, was out for ablutions when Azad Thakur, Vishal Thakur, Pushpendra Thakur and Chotu Raikwar verbally abused her. Vishal Thakur, the woman alleged, also slapped her and threatened her against going to the cops. Inquiries into the Telangana phone-snooping row have thrown up yet another explosive allegation – that then Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao wanted to arrest senior BJP leader BL Santosh to force a “compromise” and “get rid of the Enforcement Directorate case” against his daughter K Kavitha.
The allegations were made by ex-Deputy Commissioner of Police P Radhakrishna Rao in a six-page confession that contained damning claims, including one that said he “arm-twisted certain persons creating trouble” for the former Chief Minister and/or his family members and the ruling party.

The Supreme Court has refused an urgent hearing of Arvind Kejriwal’s application to extend his interim bail – on medical grounds – by a week. Arrested in March in the alleged liquor policy scam, the Delhi Chief Minister was granted interim bail this month to campaign for his AAP ahead of the election for Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha seats. He was released till June 1 and told to return to Tihar Jail by June 2.
However, Mr Kejriwal’s hopes of an immediate hearing were dashed after a vacation bench said it would only forward his plea to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who will decide when it will be heard.
“The CJI will take an appropriate decision on listing this plea,” the bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and KV Vishwanathan said, noting the verdict in the original case – Mr Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate – had been reserved after the last hearing on May 17.
Mr Kejriwal had sought an urgent hearing for Wednesday.
